Chessington World of Adventures – Rocky Mountain transformed into the Scorpion Express

About This Project

The runaway mine train has always been a firm family favourite. A product produced by Mack Rides back in the 80’s this ride was still going strong and a firm favourite in Chessington, but as with all things it was time for a re-vamp.

About Scorpion Express

The decision was made by Merlin creative team to rebrand this old favourite into the ‘Scorpion Express’ with a real sting in the tail for a creative twist.

The Business Challenge

Garmendale was appointed a the principal contractor on site. Our first task was to remove the large themed mountain and structure that the train ran through and around. When the theming was originally created it was normal practice to use scaffolding and polystyrene to create shape and structure. This made it no easy task to remove and replace the dated theming.

The Solution

Garmendale designed, manufactured and installed the new 60 metre long x 4.5 metre high backdrop, as well as a structural steel framework and foundation detail to house the themed walling. Included in the project was 28 metres of evacuation platforms and two staircases.

In addition, we removed the existing 26 metre load and unload station platform. Garmendale under new guide lines and quality standards redesigned, manufactured and installed a steel framework to carry the new anti-slip wooden decking. Included in the new design was a bridge over the track that guests would use to access the ride area. Garmendale removed modified and re-installed the access and egress gating system bringing it in line with current standards. In addition to the main works we carried out structural repairs to the track and columns, before finally refurbishing the column legs, ready for relaunch.
